Provo Music Assessment Essentials
Kindergarten
- I can sing in the high part of my voice by matching the starting note the teacher sings to me.
- I can demonstrate a steady beat by tapping, or stepping during a song.
1st Grade
- I can sing a ‘m-s’ (or m-s-l) song in-tune by myself, at an appropriate place in my voice.
- I can derive the rhythm for 8 beats in a song, using quarter, eighth notes, and quarter rests.
- I can (hear/read/write) m-s-l on the music staff.
2nd Grade
- I can sing a song in-tune with a light, legato sound in my voice.
- I can derive the rhythm for a whole song containing a half note.
- I can hear, read, and write l-s-m-r-d on the music staff.
3rd Grade
- I can sing a melodically challenging phrase with energetic breath flow.
- I can flexibly sing up and down a la pentatonic scale.
- I can hear, read, and write rhythms with ti-ta-ti in them.
4th Grade
- I can sing a round in a group, and hold my part independently.
- I can read a song on the staff with a ‘fa’ in it.
- I can hear, read, and write ti-tiki, tiki-ti, tum-ti and tim-ki.
5th Grade
- I can sing two part songs in-tune.
- I can read and write 6/8 rhythms in songs I know.
- I can read a song on the staff with a ‘ti’ in it.
- I know the address names for all the lines and spaces in the G Clef
6th Grade
- I can sing the root notes to a familiar melody.
- I can recognize the Key Signatures C, F, and G.
- I can improvise and/or compose my own song variation using solfa.
- I know the address names for the lines and spaces in the F Clef (Bass Clef).
