Dear Spring Creek Families,
With the final weeks of school upon us, I have an important message for parents. We need your child here every day. We have set an ambitious school wide goal to have 90% attendance from now until the end of the school year! Please help us by getting your child to school and on time. It’s the beginning of our end of year testing and every time a student is absent, it is difficult to make-up.
Unfortunately, chronic absenteeism is a challenge we have seen this school year at Spring Creek and throughout the state of Utah. Chronic Absenteeism is a term for students who miss 10% or more of the school year. This is equivalent to missing 18 days of school regardless of whether the absences are excused or not. Kindergarten absenteeism shows lower levels of achievement in math, reading, and general knowledge during first grade. In the 2017-2018 school year, 18% of Utah kindergarteners were chronically absent. This past year it was 36%. For 6th grade students, chronic absences become a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school. Absenteeism also has an enormous impact on a child’s ability to learn to read proficiently in the early grades.
Simply put, when students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances for graduating.
If you are struggling to get your child to school for any reason, please reach out. We are here to help. Your engagement and support in your child’s education is critical.
Sincerely, Mrs. Snow, Principal
